-Born near Thun (Switzerland) in 1944. After a first vocational training as a draftsman he got his high-school diploma, afterwards studying Mathematics, Physics and Mathematical Statistics at the University of Bern, where he graduated in Mathematics in 1972. From 1974 he was active for 33 years as the scientific expert in ballistics at the Testcenter for Ballistics, Weapons and Ammunition of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) of Switzerland. He mainly dealt with exterior ballistics, aerodynamics of projectiles, ballistic protection and mostly with wound ballistics. In 1995 he became consultant for wound ballistics at the Institute for Legal Medicine in Bern and in 1999 he earned a PhD in Forensic Science at the “École des Sciences Criminelles” of the Legal Faculty at the University of Lausanne. In view of his forthcoming retirement from MoD, in 2007 Dr Beat Kneubuehl was summoned by the then Head of the Institute of Legal Medicine at the University of Bern to join the Institute, where he was was entrusted with the task of building up a new Centre for “Forensic Physics and Ballistics”, of which he was the team leader until 2014.
